I get asked this question quite often. In part, I believe it is asked because the nature of Hypnosis is constantly changing, and our understanding of it can become quite muddied. Hypnotherapy is the act of using Hypnosis in a therapeutic capacity.

Hypnosis is a trance-like mental state in which people experience increased attention, concentration, and suggestibility. While hypnosis is often described as a sleep-like state, it is better expressed as a state of focused attention, heightened suggestibility, and vivid fantasies. People in a hypnotic state often seem sleepy and zoned out, but in reality, they are in a state of hyper-awareness.
All Hypnotherapists are Hypnotists, but not all Hypnotists are Hypnotherapists. The distinction is Hypnosis is used as a tool in a theraputic capacity, and Hypnotherapy would be the process of guiding a person towards solidifying those positive reframes into their conscious reality, following the use of Hypnosis.
Hypnosis, or, a "trance" like state is actually a state we are very familiar with in one way or another. Being in Hypnosis is similar to a meditative state, daydreaming or being on "pilot mode" when driving or doing a task that require little effort of brain capacity. Clients have stated feeling relaxed, light, calm, peaceful and tranquil; while still having full control.
A lot of people utilize Hypnosis to overcome things like fears, anxieties or to overcome an addiction like smoking etc. However, there are many uses for Hypnosis- but the overall theme of Hypnosis is people are searching for something within themselves in order to gain more confidence, feel more joy and get to their next level in life, whatever that looks like.
The point of Hypnosis, at least in my practice, is not to "fix" a person- but instead reframe their understanding of a behaviour, mindset, thought process or pattern they are looking to break or change. In order to do this, we must understand the root cause of a behaviour in order to move past it- this can be found by accessing past memories and re-direct "negative" energy towards more positive associations.
Absolutely not! You will have full control the whole time. But more importantly, you will be suggestible ONLY to the things that align with your values and belief system, so you have full control over the narrative during Hypnosis. Anything we discuss will be based on YOUR memories, YOUR words, YOUR thoughts, and you will be fully conscious the whole time.
